So what is an ABQ emissions test?
Your slightly high CO at high RPM is a sign that your catalytic converter is
on its way out. The .3 at idle if the cat is bad is a bit lean and could be
causing a lean miss fire. It would be wise to test the emissions pre-cat
(why the test port is there) to see what you really have. With things so
close I would look at individual cylinder possibilities including injectors
and cylinder problems including valves and small vacuum leaks. Also check
the ignition timing including the vacuum advance and retard. Over-advanced
timing will cause excessive HC and Co readings on these engines.

My 1984 vanagon engine was rebuilt in December 1999 because the idle
hydrocarbon reading was over 220.  The engine now has about 30K miles on it
and the idle hydrocarbon reading suddenly jumped.
Only 3K miles were driven in the last two years.

Does anyone have ideas on what may have caused this and suggestions on how
to repair?
