Subject: Fuel injector test results
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hi all,

I've had a long-term, on-going problem wherein my '87 westy runs rich and has little power until the revs get up to 2-3K RPMs. I've fixed/tested a lot of things over the years trying to track this problem down and, after talking to Dennis Haynes, who stopped by on one of his journeys, decided that I needed test the injectors. I have to say that the results seemed pretty inconclusive to me because it was really hard to see what was coming out of the injectors and how. I did observe three things, however: 1) There were little black specks in the tray I was spraying into. I am not sure if these came out of the injectors or off of them. 2) There were little "globules" of stuff floating around in the gas. This looks like what I've seen in the bottom of my gas cans when ethanol-containing gas has sat for a long time, so I'm thinking it's water. Since I was unsure whether the container I was spraying into was dry to begin with, I dried it out before testing the passenger side injectors and saw the same thing. Blech... 3) While three of the injectors appeared to be almost atomizing the fuel, the passenger-side, rear-most injector seemed to be less efficient than the others.

I'm going to go ahead and replace them all and see what happens. I'm thinking of putting some gas treatment in the tank to absorb any water in there as well.
