Are you sure it is connected to the correct pins? One half of the sender controls a glow plug relay, the other the gauge, IIRC. Each signal uses a separate ground, i.e. the sender is grounded on two terminals. I used this on my previous setup and was very accurate. If you don't have the Bentley that covers the AAZ I have one and can do a pin lookup.
