This discussion reminds me of my old 1968 Westy where the rear brake drums were cast with a splined hub, slipped over the stub axle, and tightened by this nut. What fun brake jobs were. I had to rent a 3/4" drive electric wrench, buy a socket, loosen the nut a turn or two, replace the cotter pin, and drive around the block in both directions to bust them loose.

Dumb design.

Thanks Alistair and Ed for the torque sequence and what gets squished and what does not. The mental image of looking at the assembly as a large bolt with nut holding the various inner-races/sleeves firmly together .
