It would be nice if they sold them in North America. However the current exchange rate places the entry level model near $47,000 USD. Who know what an optioned up all wheel drive version would run?

Yes, building them on this side of the water would probably be cheaper but I'm guessing that VW doesn't see a business case.

I think that a $25,000 basic passenger van, with a $40,000 AWD full camper would give a home run. Maybe they could swing that building vans in the US or Mexico, but that's VW's business.

I'm glad I have a Westy Vanagon to enjoy right now, and this great list of Vanagon fans.
