If you yank the A/C because you need the space and don't want the weight, just keep in mind that you be filling that new space with stuff that has weight of its own, so you may not get the net benefit you think you did.  However, to each his own.  I'll keep my A/C and try to keep it working. I do not deny that the VW system can sometimes be a trial but it is worth it to me. Incidentally, I have also experienced nagging A/C problems with other vehicles I really liked; an '86 E30 BMW 325, an '88 Ford Aerostar 5-speed, and a '95 Plymouth Grand Voyager, so I do not blame the Vanagon system for its shortcomings.  I've hung on to this one and kept it cooling whereas the others were let go. Well, it may be the best system but it's quite old and I have dumped a LOT of money into old AC systems with no ROI before.  AND at least two PO's of this van did the same.  The last dumped $1.7k into the AC and it is now not working.  IF I can get a good reference for a VW AC repair shop near Portland Oregon I'll leave it in long enough to explore the option.  This list is likely the only place I will get a reference so . . .

I need the space, don't want the weight and am not really concerned about resale value.
