My ceiling fan is also wired to the dimmer.  In order to make the light and
the fan independent of one another, I need to purchase a switch from the
manufacturer of the fan.  I already tried purchasing a universal
switch/remote, but it wasn't compatible so I had to return it to Home
Depot.  I know the manufacturer makes those switches, but I haven't gotten
around to ordering one, yet! Some ceiling fans might already come with a
switch that allows the fan and the light to work separately - it depends on
the manufacturer.
