I can't say how it would have worked in that weather, but the household-type gas fridge that I grew up with at my grandparents' camp in New Hampshire kept ice cream perfectly well. To a kid it was no different from the electric one at home, except quieter. If the grownups gave it any special treatment I wasn't aware of it.
