You might try using the lower setting -- the knob is a true thermostat, switches the electric and the main flame on and off at the setpoint. Pilot flame (bypass around the main valve) runs continuously. All off but pilot on MIN, all on on MAX.

If electric isn't cooling as well as gas, check for correct heater consumption (85W) and good conduction heater to boiler. Flakes of corrosion? Oxides are insulators.
