I have at one time removed and refurbished (cleaned and painted) mine.  If I recall, there is a circlip on the end of each which is hard to get off and easily lost in the process of removal or replacement.  would not be bad idea to have a spare one.  Otherwise, Setphen’s description below fits my memory of the job.
