The factory hole would be oval, and on the driver's side. That black spot could be from an owner's attempt at installing an antenna.

Hi all.

If a new Vanagon was sold without a radio, was an antenna installed regardless? My then new GM Firefly was sold as "radio ready" (antenna, speakers installed) but that's an apples to oranges comparison. Given the nature of the old Bugs I've owned, my guess is that the factory wouldn't have installed an antenna.

I have my eye on a US located 1980 sunroof air cooled. The one image in ad shows a black spot at front clip where antenna would be:
