There should be a screw to hold the element in place. Image of 182A 1 pc. elements: http://tinyurl.com/pvkoum6 The screw doesn't have to be super tight; the outer metal of the heating element(s) is relatively thin. It may be that there is a dimple at the element for screw to seat in.

On that note, i recall reading of someone shimming the element so it would contact the tube as much as possible. But then the internet is full of "information". IIRC, I hammered a piece of brass flat and shimmed the element at the screw side of tube. I doubt doing this helped improve cooling though.
