Actually, the air-cooled wedges may have still had the aerial on the passenger side ... I'll try to swing past an '81 a few blocks over and have a look tomorrow.

The splits and bays had the aerial on the passenger side {I've seen an occasional split with the aerial in the centre, but likely an aftermarket install}. Every Vanagon I've seen has them on the driver's side.
