Before I had JB assists, when the single working spring cable failed, that top became heavy FAST. While one is checking wear at the strut elbows, I think it would be wise to check the spring cable at each arm. Top down, cable is tight (spring is compressed) Top up, cable is slightly slack. If cable is broken, one can be made.
