the lifter noise sounds about right and is consistent with not having
driven it for a while. it is quite a sharp and clattery sound, not jingly
or having any "ring" to it. It is a quite alarming sound but is apparently
common and harmless. My '86 w/ 220k does it if I don't drive it for a
while.
I had an intermittent thunking sound around corners and going straight
uphill under heavy load. Definitely sounded like it was coming from the
rear wheels. that seemed to go away after I replaced an outer CV joint.
It actually seems to be coming back now... :(
