Fascinating! That is not something I would have expected at all as the operating forces are very light. It reminds me that switch gets a lot of use in a gritty environment. I wonder if it ran for a long time without the dust cover. Perfectly reasonable repair. The switch contacts should last practically forever -- at 30 mA noninductive load a four amp switch won't notice; and 30 mA is enough to get it out of the "dry circuit" regime where switching energy is too small to blow contaminants away. I'm assuming that tencentlife is correct about the 30 mA.

You can monitor that switch from the cockpit by simply connecting a yellow LED across it, preferably with a couple hundred ohms in series but you can get away without. LED on = switch open.
