I use Vice-Grips to clamp onto one of the terminals to help me lift out the old battery, and also to aid in installation of the new battery.  Done it several times on my Vanagon.  And, I recently replaced my 12-year old battery with a new Group 41 battery from Walmart, about $100.  Walmarts all across the country of course, so easy warranty service if needed.  I've been very happy with the quality of the batteries at Walmart. The "correct" battery, that has the foot to fit the factory bracket, has a handle on it from the factory to facilitate holding it and lowering it into the compartment.  Without a handle, your hands have to hold the battery by the sides or ends to lower it into place, and they suffer from being scraped.  The backs of one's hands have thin skin and bleed profusely.  mcneely
