that's funny ..
perhaps I'm not getting a 'true' 48.
I put many of them in Vanagons and am currently running about 8 or so of
them in waterboxer vanagons in the stock battery box.
yup ...one of those battery strap things that grabs onto the posts is a
must-have tool.
any battery with a built-on lifting strap I just remove.
I like something like a 1/4 inch thick heavy rubber mat on top of the
battery....to insulate electrically.
Trusting that the plastic positive cover terminal will 'forever' prevent
shorting to the metal cover ..
nope ..don't trust it.
what I prefer to do ..
purely for ease of access and checking things is to remove the hinged
metal cover by drilling out the rivits ( non-camper ) .
Then there's usually a piece of rug that covers the battery.
Not being able to get at stuff quickly and easily ..no thanks !
as for Westy's with screw-down battery covers ....PIA.
Ever buy a say 85 Westy and check out the Aux Battery and find out you
were the first person to look at that battery since the factory ? ...how
fun.

The head is now too tall and it can work through the plastic cover or if the cover is left off it can short out on the metal cover.
