Good thoughts, Stuart, thanks! These guys, in fact, have a great deal
of experience working on Vanagons, which is why I had my van towed
there. When I initially had it looked at, I took it to a local Volvo
shop where they like to work on Vanagons, or rather, they like the
concept of Vanagons, but they're no Vanagon experts. I took it there
because the noises it was making made me feel like it couldn't be
driven very far. This place is about 5 miles from my house, but I
didn't have the revs up that high for that trip.
It's currently at the Vanagon-expert shop that's 40 miles away, so I
won't be driving it around anywhere. Hoping to hear good news from
them soon . . .

It is a more metallic sound than the deeper clunking sound from a bad bearing, kind of the difference between hitting metal with a carpenter's hammer vs. with a sledge hammer. In fact, it is the flat lifter "hammering" on the valve train as it is flung off the cam.

They were in the process of trying noninvasive diagnostics to try to find the problem but had pulled the valve covers off to investigate. Guess I'll find out more tomorrow, but at least I know it's in good hands now.
