Clatters most always valve train. Rod bearings shuffling noises and knocks on deceleration. Main bearings low frequency groans or vibrations under load and low oil pressure. More felt than heard. Often accompanied by leaks at both ends. Pistons slapping noises at various speeds and loads or decelerating.

what are the compression numbers for that cylinder and how do they compare to the others? I don't think main bearings would make a "clatter" noise. The valve train would and they could get to that without removing the engine. Valve train problems would also probably show up on the compression tests. Edward
