any leak one can imagine , and then some , is possible on a waterboxer.
there are dozens of possible leak places.

most cars  front engine have maybe ..say 8 to 10 hoses. .
in a vanagon the cooling system parts are spread throughout the entire
vehicle.

here's a fun one ..
VW cleverly hid the Coolant Distribution Tower behind the firewall on
2.1 waterboxer vans.
A few times I've seen a  plastic hose nipple for a heater hose just
crumble.

plastic t-stat housings do that too.
