Loren Cheapest&Easiest RPM Dropper is to put bigger tires on the Rear ~ My VDUBARU is a 4spd2wd 90Westy + 2001 ImprezaRS EJ25 ~ Its Trany has stock gears 1-3 & a .77 4th ~ I run 225/60r15s on the front so the Speedo&Odo are correct & 235/75r15s on the rear so I am able to cruise along @ 80MPH (whenever the law allows) @ a very pleasant 3600RPM ~ I prefer the combo not only to lower the RevsPerMinute but to lower the RevsPerMile, there by getting more miles of use out of all those moving parts ~ like from the TimingBelt all the way through to the WheelBearings & Tires & it also LowersTheNose which I like to think might help the AeroDynamics just a bit ~ Maybe not much but EveryLittleBitHelps ~ It is still a 4000lb BigSteel"ConcreteBlock" & that, in combo with the Taller4th & TallerTires, does cause it be slowed down by headwinds & the occasional long hillclimb but those conditions probably only occur less then 1% of the time, even here in the mountainous SW & 3rd gear RedLines around 90MPH & will cruise @ 70MPH@5000RPM all day long if need be. The lower RPMs seem to have had no impact on the MsPG that it gets pretty consistently ~ On SummerGas VDubaru gets a pretty consistent 22-23MPG no mater what the SpeedLimit is & I usually drive about 5% over the S'L' ~ Even with a Canoe on the roof ~ But my Canoe only weighs 40lbs & it is very AeroDynamic ~ I live in NM @5000FtASL & most all my driving is done @orAbove that Alt' so depending on where you are you could have as much as 18% more Torque/HP to play with than I do ~ But that will MostLikely Lower Your MsPG a bit ~ In addition to My Fronts&Rears being Diff'Sizes they are Diff'TreadStyles ~ The Fronts are Cooper CS4s & the Rears are Copper Discoverer AT3s ~ ORR ~ DeanB

I could (but cannot possibly afford) go to a higher 3rd gear in the auto tranny, adds say it would drop the RPM at cruising speed by 800 RPM. And thus save some gas on long highway runs. > But what if I did this? Go to larger tires on the rear? Why only the rear? If I were to go to a tire with larger circumference on the rear, although loosing a little power at the ground I should drop my RPMs at cruise. > So, is there a fault in my logic? And would my gain be so small as to not be worth the effort? BTW, I haven't tried to do the math on this one yet, just thought I'd throw it out. > > __._,_.___ > Posted by: Loren Busch <starwagen@gmail.com> > Reply via web post • Reply to sender • Reply to group • Start a New Topic • Messages in this topic (1) > PICTURES! http://picasaweb.google.com/wetwesties/ > > To leave us: wetwesties-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com > > Calendar of events: http://www.wetwesties.org/calendar > > For technical resources: http://www.wetwesties.org/links.htm > > Please conserve bandwidth and clip quoted material in your posts. > Include only the information that is relevant to your response. > > VISIT YOUR GROUP New Members 5 > • Privacy • Unsubscribe • Terms of Use > . > > > __,_._,___ |
