Don,

having done this with a scirocco what Ed mentions is correct. The best way is to have a manual shift donor. Remember you will also the pedal cluster that will be attached to the donor.

This took 2 weekends with plenty of able hands and the 2 cars side by side. The vanagon is larger and the linkage is more complex but it is doable.
