Once you added the washer, taking it out didn't change anything. Adding the washer caused the black spacer sleeve to seat farther down which pressed the lock/bearing/switch assembly deeper into the plastic part labeled "ring" in the Bentley diagram and increased the clearance between wheel and switch plate. Taking the washer out doesn't move things back up the column.

What the Allen clamp-screw adjustment does is change the spacing of the plastic shroud to the steering wheel.

If yours does not have plastic cladding on the side I have one that will work. It's still not totally assured, but I expect to be at West River and can bring it there. P-mail me.
