My understanding is that VW had a "Weekender" option and for a 7 passenger van that was a fold down rear seat with a matching cushion over the engine cover.

now I'm confused my 85 GL 7 passenger has a Z bed is that not a factory item?

some people call ANY dark colored cola "coke" regardless of who made it some people call ANY facial tissues "kleenex" regardless of who made it

the name "z bed" is a brand name, and it was a hardware kit to make your vans rear seat into a bed...made by a now-defunct company called Z Products that was not affiliated with volkswagen. they just made aftermarket camping products for vw vans. its NOT a volkswagen name. somewhere along the line someone started INCORRECTLY calling ANY rear bed in volkswagen vans or campers a "z-bed' weather it was made by Z Products or not...and the name somehow INCORRECTLY stuck.

your 85 GL seven passenger van probably has the volkswagen factory "rear bed option and folding middle seat option" please do NOT call it a Z bed.
