You're way ahead of me in entertainment systems Alistair. Along with every other aspect of Syncro modification. :)
I find that the phone is enough for my music needs, so I thought why carry around this big box? The beauty of using a dock is in just plunking my phone into it. Charging and sound are available with no extra wires to fiddle with. Navigation is plenty visible and turn-by-turn directions come through the sound system if desired, a boon for my lousy hearing.
Currently the entire amp is behind the dash, including the potentiometer. Volume is controlled through the phone, though I may consider moving the pot to the dash in the future.

But recently I found a RAM mount and I popped in a 1/4-20 riv nut beside the lighter and I can screw in the ram mount base to that. I can hold either the mini or the air 2 on that. The mini is less intrusive and works very well as an off road nav system ( Bluetooth connection to garmin glo receiver) and I lead USB cable out through ashtray to the pad.
