I have a 5sp manual in my gas inline van...84 with a hybrid ABA/8valve head I don't know which one it is...yet..but mine has a bit of a howl that's begun over the past year or so and I've been told to be 'gentle' with it because the howl could be causing wear to the case, or something like that...I've been saving money to have it rebuilt soon and driving my other van as much as possible...'saving' wear and tear on the 5sp so as to not cause expensive machine work during the rebuild.. I think the 5sp is a great piece in a Vanagon, but pretty rare...I can always find an approppriate gear for whatever I am driving over...and it seems to really be handy both on the highway and when I am rock-crawling on back roads...

I'll be interested in how your rebuild turns out...keep us posted..
