It does wear and chip. Put down a metal etching primer first (you can buy it in a rattle can from a paint shop) and make sure the farm is really clean. I have never done this myself, but I understand that you can get the aluminum re-anodized in black. That would be a perfect solution if it is possible. Second to that, powder coating. After that, paint. You can always touch it up.
