May I suggest looking into electric power steering? I recently saw one in a local vanagon. Adapted from a early 2000s scion. I haven't had a chance to test drive it, just turning the wheel while parked. I do have the invite for a test drive and I will report back.

Cost 200 bucks for the assist, 60 bucks for little controller that substitutes for the stock speed control. Steering effort can be adjusted. There is some fab work to make it fit, but not as much as you think.

Anyway, it's an alternative to hydraulics.
