Toyota Prius has been using electric power steering since the car's inception, some 20 years ago now (they were on Japanese roads several years before they were imported here). Electric power steering is on a number of different Japanese makes I believe.
When I had not had my Prius very long, I was out of town, and had something that I thought needed looked at. It didn't. However, I had spilled a little oil in changing it. They guy I had look at it told me that it was power steering fluid leaking. Good think I didn't have him work on anything. He was a Toyota mechanic, but as I understand it, they specialize, and he hadn't yet been trained on the Prius. They just put him on my vehicle because I considered it kind of an urgent situation, and they were squeezing me in. mcneely
