Subject: ATE (Teves) Caliper Damping Plate
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8

Hi all.

Bentley calls it a "Damping Plate", VAGCAT diagram (like ETKA) shows it as an "anti twist retainer". Image: http://www.vagcat.com/p/B004/068000.png I've never seen a Girling caliper up close but the diagram appears to show a similar piston type for each.

Without the OEM plate, is the caliper piston prone to rotating?

This may be a moot question. The pads I had in my 1981 Westy had a soft backing material. Image showing back of one pad: http://tinyurl.com/p9egeyz I assume this is an anti squeal material but is it also there to keep the piston from rotating? Pads had at least 75% wear left, I don't know how many miles, but it doesn't look like the caliper piston rotated.

Thanks,

Neil.
