Try this: go to a parts store and buy a cheap grease gun, grease and a needle that snaps into the business end of the grease gun. Inject lots of grease through the rubber boot. Massage it some. See if that doesn't buy you a lot of miles. When I have made it home at three in the morning nursing a horribly rattling joint, the offending clearances upon inspection were mere thousandths though it sounded like it was going to explode.
