I'm sorry, I thought my follow up went out to everyone!

The next day it would not start still, so I went on a hunt for a mechanic that knew what a Vanagon was. Found him. He came out and confirmed what all the advisors said. Starter. The sound was because it was getting stuck in the extended position and finally lock the flywheel. (he did not see any apparent damage to the flywheel.)

Easy fix except no part in sight. Was stuck in town for an extra day while one was rushed in at over twice the normal cost.(don't get me started).

Took him at most half an hour to replace and then we were on the road again. No real problems from then on and got home Sunday afternoon.

After that, fine. Drove on for a while and stopped at a rest stop (kids and their potty breaks.) would not start after that. Feeling it was tied to heat, I let it rest 10 min, not long enough I know. Turned the key, and it started to turn, but making a godawful sound. The best comparison is if you turned the ignition after the engine is already running, but enough that I felt it under my foot. It did actually start and I went on 60 miles to the first sign of civilization. Note: the coolant temp Gauge never went too high, but the light was blinking the whole way. Stopped at a hotel, it won't start again, made that sound again but would not start. Waiting for nightfall before trying again. Tried again 4 hrs later at night, nothing. A click and faint hum, that is all. >>> >>> Any urgent suggestions?
