Starting back when cars started having pretty complex emissions systems ...and often Lots of vacuum hoses and devices ( you should see a pre-fuel injection Calfiornia Rabbit sometime ..like 20+ vacuum hoses ) ..

it became a Federal Requirement that all US cars have a Vacuum Diagram ...under the hood, even on the underside of the hood sometimes .. and little colored plastic rings like the yellow one on the Fuel Press. regulator in the pic .. are shown in the Vaccuem diagram ...like where a hose connects to the regulator ...on the diagram it'll show yellow there.

this page .. https://images.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search;_ylt=A86.JyDqsL1VPlIAEk8nnIlQ;_ylu=X3oDMTByNWU4cGh1BGNvbG8DZ3ExBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--?p=VW+VAnagon+Vaccuum+Hose+Diagram+Sitcker&fr=yhs-mozilla-001&hspart=mozilla&hsimp=yhs-001

has pictures of many VW Vacuum Diagram stickers .

oh right ..now I remember where I've seen one on a Vanagon .. on the cover of the black junction box , left forward corner of the engine compartment.

in about the 5th row of pictures down, on the right side sort of ... is a pic of an air-cooled vanagon vacuum diagram sticker . Looks like yellow-tagged hoses going to the distributor .

I was actually a licensed smog technician in California for a while in the mid-80's. Officially smog-certified a semi-beater MG Midget car in a shop I worked in , in South San Fransisco . Smog techs are supposed to know all that vacuum hose stuff...or be familiar with dealing with it.
