I've had good results from Heckmann Thiemann Motors They work on VW, Porsche, and Subaru. There always seems to be a Vanagon or two in their parking lot waiting for service.   2327 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR 97202 (503) 233-4809   http://heckmannthiemann.com/ ----- Original Message -----

Hey Volks:

Thank you to everyone supplying me with helpful details about how to prep/adapt the 2.1 auto for my 1.9 engine bay, manual trans and 1.9 FI. Many of those things I will do to the 2.1 in the next few days.

However, I am still looking for a PDX mechanic to do the engine (and attached working manual trans) drop and replace. I cannot do this myself due to literally getting run over last fall. Closest shop to the van, which can drive, is Heckmann & Thiemann, who are prohibitively expensive; I think the swap quote, *without* coolant/wiring/FI hookup was about $3.5k. H & T do beautiful work with prices to match, but this is a brute force job, not an exquisite restoration.

Anybody have experience with other PDX/PNW area mechanics? The van *might* be able to make it to Bend, Salem or Seattle-Tacoma. Maybe.

Otherwise, I'll just start contacting all the PDX VW shops, but that seems a daunting task, with no idea of Vanagon experience or quality of work.
