If the odometer continues to turn while the speedometer doesn't, then it is not the speedometer cable - the speedometer cable drives both of them!

I'd look inside the speedometer head for a plastic gear not quite lined up anymore - I've had a VW odometer stop working because a tiny gear had slid along its shaft just enough to not engage - perhaps the same is possible for the speedometer.
