I used Hans' Foreign Auto for a flywheel seal and clutch in the middle of a long road trip many years ago. They did good work and were reasonable, but that was ~12 years ago, and apparently Hans has retired now, so I don't know what their current cred is. Sorry, but that's the best I have...

Many of those things I will do to the 2.1 in the next few days. However, I am still looking for a PDX mechanic to do the engine (and attached working manual trans) drop and replace. I cannot do this myself due to literally getting run over last fall. Closest shop to the van, which can drive, is Heckmann & Thiemann, who are prohibitively expensive; I think the swap quote, *without* coolant/wiring/FI hookup was about $3.5k. H & T do beautiful work with prices to match, but this is a brute force job, not an exquisite restoration. Anybody have experience with other PDX/PNW area mechanics? The van *might* be able to make it to Bend, Salem or Seattle-Tacoma. Maybe. Otherwise, I'll just start contacting all the PDX VW shops, but that seems a daunting task, with no idea of Vanagon experience or quality of work. ------------------------------
