Any T 1-3/4 standard or high-brightness red LED will work here. If Radio Shack are still selling their bag of LEDs it has some red ones that are very satisfactory, considerably brighter than stock and somewhat more orangey. Current-limiting resistors are already in the circuit, no extra ones needed.

That said, LEDs hardly ever fail, so say more about what's happening?
