Do we see a market opportunity here?
Just as Kia and Hundai broke into the low dollars end of the market with a
more basic vehicle, how about this.  VW (or someone) builds and markets a
car WITHOUT all the 'features' we are now seeing?  And drops the price
accordingly!  A back to basics vehicle.  No electric/electronic anything
that doesn't absolutely have to be there.  I'm betting that there is a huge
part of the buying market that would jump at the idea.  And the price.
Where is the Renault 4 CV when we need it?  (big grin here)
