My money is on a heat-soaked coil. This symptom has happened to me twice and both times it was the coil. Put a new one in, the best one you can find. ECU can take the heat, and usually when they go bad they are done, and don't come back in my experience. The trip-reset-while-moving thing is pretty much a myth, by my understnading. My speedo guy actually advises hitting the reset button while moving, as it helps reallign the gears. The drive gear had walked itsself out of contact (as is normal with these VDO units) just before we left town. I had tapped it back into mesh position, knowing full well that it would eventually walk off again before too long (I'm happy it lasted as long as it did!. Speedo rebuild time! George replaced everything at the top of the tank. All grommets, including the crossover; the 20 year old fuel level sending unit was also replaced.
