The way I see it there are only two reasons to muscle the brake cable out of the backing plate. Replacing the cable or the backing plate. At that point if the end ferrule is damaged replace the cable anyway.

I'll apologize if this has been answered already, but one thought I had re:

When removing and installing them, I use pliers to grab the collar on cable housing where it inserts into brake backing plate. I don't know if this is normal procedure but I think it is given size of collar.
Though UN-likely, I wondered if it were possible for the enthusiastic amateur to squeeze that part of the cable hard enough to cause the cable to bind at that point. Sometimes, the cable can be somewhat seized to the backing plate.
Just a thought.
