If you're over fifty it's probably you. I remember when a fifty pound sandbag suddenly felt like a 95 pound sack of cement, and I hate to tell you what a gallon of milk feels like lately.

The usual failure mode of those spring assists involves a snapping noise and no doubt at all that something changed. They are normally slack when the bar is straight -- there's no point in them being otherwise as the leverage is such that they can't give any useful assistance there anyway.
