Well for us, it's always been a Golf. First an '86 (like the Westy), then a '97 (still have to sell that one...) and now a 2015 with the new 1.8T engine. The new Golf is super quiet and comfy, and gets 30-40 MPG (me vs. wife, that puppy will move with a lead foot). Don't know about longevity for this one yet, but the first went almost 200K before we sold it, and the '97 has 115K on it. And we have the 2010 Jetta Sportwagen TDI for wagon needs. A/C compressor grenaded at less than 30K, but otherwise trouble free and 35-40mpg.
