Yes the air filter is a toss and replace. VW was amongst the last to stay with oil bath air filters and 72 was the last year. Filter capability just wasn't that important in the era of dropping vlaves or throwing rods long before anything would wear out. Remember the beetle engines didn’t even have oil filters. Dennis
