I installed K&N's in both of my Mercedes 300E's and was having oil analysis done on both at the time. Silica spiked in both cars and that was enough for me to throw away both filters.

And BTW, silica is dirt! I called the oil analysis company and they told me that I had an air leak in the intake somewhere that was letting unfiltered air in. The K&N filters were letting fine dirt pass right through!!!

I have used a K&N cleanable air filter in my '84 1.9 for too many years to remember when I first put it in.
