there's a valve on the side of the rear heater core. It's in the Van's Owners Manual.

'forward' is 'on.' recommended by me is always have it on 'some' yearround.

Many a heater core as rotted out and I think having coolant just sit in it for years is a bad practice.

Circulating hopefully fairly fresh coolant is much better for it.

There are quite a lot of vanagon drivers that don't know about that hidden heater valve control. I was surprised when I got my first vanagon over 20 yrs ago ...I've never seen any car with a heater valve control under a rear seat.

check to see if it's been disconnected from the cooling system ..many are.
