Luckily the air intake on the vanagon is fairly clean so that the lack of good air filtration does not make for instant death. Consider oil testing. You want to ensure that silica is not floating in the oil that the oil filter can’t handle.

I have used a K&N cleanable air filter in my '84 1.9 for too many years to remember when I first put it in.
