One of the problems with oil bath air cleaners is that some of the oil will get carried into the combustion process. Not the best thing for catalytic converters and O2 sensors.

FYI - Mercedes ran oil bath in the diesel through 1975, and oil bath is far superior to pleated paper. Problem is, an oil bath large enough to pass enough air for a modern engine would need to be huge.

K&N gauze filters use oil but they are not the same as oil bath and their filters pass way too much dirt for me. The best solution for modern engines is pleated paper.

Yes the air filter is a toss and replace. VW was amongst the last to stay with oil bath air filters and 72 was the last year. Filter capability just wasn't that important in the era of dropping vlaves or throwing rods long before anything would wear out. Remember the beetle engines didn’t even have oil filters.

I miss the good oil-bath air filter I had on my '72.

Is my waterboxer air filter washable, or a toss 'n' replace? -- Jack "Rocket j Squirrel" Elliott 1984 Westfalia, auto trans, Bend, Ore.
