When my '91 GL automatic still had its 2.1L wbx and 100K+ miles, we would get about 19 mpg cruising at 70 mph on expressway trips. Now with its Subie EJ22 we get about 1 or 2 mpg better at the same speed. Of course we accelerate more vigorously now. :-)
