I saw a 15-20 f drop in temperature with my ABA inline VW....when I installed the vanagon standard type oil filter/heat exchanger after I swapped blocks from a 1.8 liter Rabbit gas motor, which ran with no cooler from the factory...So the standard VW cooler does do some significant cooling in my experience...

If I owned a WBX motor I certainly would, given the wide spread issues with flicker oil lights after a fast run, and other indications that low OP and high temps exist in the motors, I certainly would have some oil cooling system to keep the oil under about 240f max...
